
At the beginning, the invited guests barely knew why they were there, only that they’d been invited by Vanderbilt University to discuss something new: the Greater Nashville Venture Capital Association. They got some questions answered, and heard about the mission from Vandy’s board chairman, himself a venture capital investor who sees what similar organizations have done in Boston and Silicon Valley — and sees “competitive emerging cities” such as Austin and Miami starting their own efforts. “If we put out an ‘open for business’ sign, we’ll attract more entrepreneurs, more venture capitalists, to the local ecosystem,” he said. “Eventually, an entity like this can become the voice of the industry in Nashville and in the state of Tennessee.”
